From the book written by Vincent Caretta: “Equiano, the African: Biography of a Self-Made Man.” I am to focus on Chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 11, 13, and 14. I must analyze the two identities that Equiano adopted during his life. I must answer the following questions: In what ways did Equiano prsent himself as an African? Who was Olaudah Equiano, and what did the author wish readers to understand about his African identity? In what ways did Equiano present himself as a European? Who was Gustavas Vassa, and what did the author wish readers to understand about his European identity? And, most importantly, why did Equiano adopt such a complicated notion of self identity? What purpose did it serve? Hint from the prof: The meanings of his two identities and their purpose are related questions and the prof. expects my thesis to be able to answer both questions at the same time.
