The modern British and Irish poets frequently use animal figures to convey a criticism of culture as it has evolved, or to focus a quality (or series of qualities) that the “civilized” tend to overlook or regard as “low.” Discuss this operation in the work of Ted Hughes in the poems: “Otter,” the Crow poems, and “Skylark.” However, given the limitation of space, perhaps focus on only a few poems might be more prudent. Make ample use of quotes when applicable. Provide evidence, not conclusions.
